22 Juni 2007 | Italië, Rome
And then we were in Rome, frome the 11th of June till the 16th. It's just the most beautifull city in Europe, if not one in world. We stayed at an hotel called Albergo della Lunetta. Translated it means: Hotel the Moon. Situated right in the center of historical Rome. Next to piazza de Campo de' Fiori. Just across the piazza Navona.
This city has got such a rich history and so many fine details, that we really needed all the five days to discover the big sights. I read on some blogs that you'll need a lifetime to discover everything in Rome. I'm certainly not taking that into doubt. Anyways, as you just walk on the streets of Rome, you'll sense a vibe of culture, peace and living. As if Rome is resting from its history of war and reign. I especially got that feeling after visiting the Roman Forum at night, when the tourists are partying or at sleep. It's just an amazing city and I would recommend it to anybody who considers taking a citytrip.
The italian people in Rome are fascinating. Although they talk really fast, they seem very relaxed and know how to enjoy life. It all reflects on the way of living: siesta in the afternoon, meals spread over the day untill late at night, drinking tiny espresso's and a fine sense for styling. We also adapted their style of living along the days. So we started the day with an espresso and panini's or pastries. After some wandering around, we would take another espresso. Lunch would be some bruschetta, pasta and insalata with a grande aqua. This would be around 4 o'clock. Diner around 9, just like the locals. The first course would be pasta and the second course some meat dish, all with a nice glass of Chianti and of course a grande aqua. The timing of eating suits me alot better, then the Dutch customs. Instead of eating at 6 and getting hungry at 9, I can spread it more throughout the day. While I am talking about dining, I might as well talk about the best pizza I ever had. It's the pizza Baffetto at pizzeria Baffetto. Don't get me wrong, I had my share of pizza's in Italy. I don't exactly know how to describe it. The dough is very thin but just strong enough to hold all the various kind of toppings, which in place makes a perfect balance of different kind of flavours. Same thing with the bruschetta and insalata's over there. So when you go to Rome don't forget to Baffetto. It's in via del governo Vecchio, just near piazza Navona.
Ok, I think I have talked enough. If you are interested in a clear expression of Rome, just visit my photoalbum website for all the photos. It's at http://www.flickr.com/photos/fengchen . Ow and did I mention the trip is my birthday present from Wai Ah? Isn't she just the sweetest girlfriend ever. Thank you for my great present sweetheart. It was an unforgettable experience.
